Tartar buildup can irritate your gums, causing inflammation, bleeding, and allowing bacteria to invade the gum tissue. While brushing your teeth and getting regular dental cleanings are important, they can also introduce oral bacteria into your bloodstream. Researchers have found oral bacteria in the arterial plaque of heart attack and stroke victims, as well as in the synovial fluid of people with rheumatoid arthritis.
Plaque is a soft, living bacterial biofilm that hasn’t yet calcified and is associated with a more acidic environment that can increase the risk of cavities. Tartar is hardened, calcified plaque that can’t be removed with brushing and requires a professional dental cleaning.
Once tartar is removed, the key is preventing it from coming back. Some people notice more tartar buildup on a keto diet, but that doesn’t mean you need to change your diet. Just apply these simple tartar prevention tips to help prevent tartar buildup.
