240-249 AD: A Crisis of Confidence

Gordian III lives long enough to die in mysterious circumstances soon after a battle with the Persians. In Gordian's place, the legions hailed Philip (the Arab) as Emperor. Philip ruled for 5 years and had the privilege of leading the celebration of Rome's 1000th year.

The celebrations were interrupted by the invasion of a new people into Moesia, the province north of Thrace, along the Black Sea coast in modern Bulgaria. These invaders are our first encounter with the Goths. They will play a role in our story for the next 46 decades. The commander Philip sent to stop the invasion, Decius, was proclaimed emperor by the legions and then marched toward Rome.
