Thirty miles northeast of modern Mexico City, Teotihuacan rises from the valley floor as one of the largest and most carefully planned cities of the ancient Americas. Its original name, founders, rulers, and language remain uncertain. Its central avenue, pyramids, plazas, altered river course, and underground chambers follow a rigid geometric order, with the principal urban grid rotated about fifteen and a half degrees east of true north. Centuries later, the Aztecs associated the abandoned ruins with the creation of the Sun, the Moon, and the gods.
Ancient-astronaut theorists interpret Teotihuacan as a possible ceremonial place of contact with sky beings: a cosmic city, or ritual spaceport, designed as a place of arrival for gods believed to descend from the heavens. They point to the Avenue of the Dead, the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon, the Feathered Serpent pyramid, astronomical alignments, pyrite spheres, liquid mercury, reflective minerals, and later creation myths.
Archaeology offers a powerful human explanation: Teotihuacan was a planned sacred metropolis built by an organized Mesoamerican society using astronomy, surveying, ritual authority, engineering, and state labor. Was Teotihuacan designed as a ceremonial place of contact with sky beings, or as a human-built model of cosmic order?
