Daybreak: The Weightier Things

Good morning from the little station on Commercial Street.

On this Tuesday edition of Daybreak, we begin with a few words from today’s Gospel that seem particularly suited to our distracted age:

“The weightier things of the law; judgment, and mercy, and faith.” — Matthew 23:23, Douay-Rheims

From there, the morning paper takes us around Atchison and beyond.

Tomorrow is the first day of classes at Benedictine College, where the new academic year will begin at 7:30 in the morning with President Stephen Minnis leading the Opening Rosary in the courtyard beside the new Moritz Library.

We meet today’s saint, Louis IX of France, and consider what an old king might still teach us about authority, justice and responsibility.

And with Benedictine’s upcoming “Church in an Algorithmic Age” symposium on the horizon, we ask a thoroughly modern version of an ancient question: amid AI, technology, specifications, schedules and endless information, how do we keep sight of the things that actually matter?

Along the way, we’ll open the morning papers for stories of history, science, engineering, craftsmanship, books and the unexpected bits of wonder that make the world more interesting.
