Dr. Nicole Simek is a francophone and French Caribbean literary scholar whose work has examined the shared relationship of the political and artistic identities of those writers and peoples alike. She has further explored and challenged the ideas of those identities and how they are situated and interpreted, with a notable familiarity with Maryse Conde that even features Dr. Simek interpreting one of Conde’s novels, The Belle Creole. Her other published works include Hunger and Irony in the French Caribbean: Literature, Theory, and Public Life and Eating Well, Reading Well: Maryse Condé and the Ethics of Interpretation.
