What if Robert Baratheon Named Stannis Hand of the King, Not Ned

Stannis looks at the letter that had arrived by raven directly from the Red Keep. Even before opening it, he knew it was a letter he had been expecting for some time, but one he had hoped not to find.

If Robert were writing to him now, then it means that Jon Arryn is likely dead. The two of them had been investigating a major corruption scandal that involved most of the Small Council. And just as they were starting to make progress, the Hand of the King suddenly fell ill.
