In My Kitchen this week, I am joined by nutritionist, author and podcast host Sarah Ann Macklin. Sarah is the author of Healthy Shouldn't Be This Hard and host of the Live Well Be Well podcast.
In this episode, we explore an area of health and wellbeing that has never been discussed on the podcast before: self-compassion.
Many of us spend our lives setting unrealistic expectations for ourselves. We commit to diets that are impossible to sustain, sign up for challenges that are far beyond our current capabilities, and then criticise ourselves when we inevitably fall short. Yet we would never speak to a friend the way we speak to ourselves.

Sarah explains why being kinder to yourself might be one of the most powerful health interventions available. We discuss how modern culture has conditioned us to constantly compare ourselves to others, chase optimisation at every opportunity, and measure our worth against an impossible standard. The result? Disappointment, burnout and a feeling that we're never doing enough.
We also explore the connection between mindset, stress, nervous system health and physical wellbeing, and why sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is stop trying to be perfect.
In this episode, we discuss:
This conversation challenged many of my own beliefs around health and wellbeing and reminded me that perhaps the healthiest version of ourselves isn't the most disciplined, productive or optimised, it's the one that treats itself with the most compassion.
