Distance control is the foundation of elite putting. A perfect read with the wrong speed will rarely go in, while an imperfect read with excellent pace can still finish close—or even find the hole. Speed controls scoring, and speed determines how much a putt will break.
Putting is not governed by “feel” alone. The golf ball responds to four measurable factors: energy, friction, gravity, and time.
At impact, kinetic energy transfers from the putter to the ball. From that point, friction continuously removes energy. Fast greens create less resistance, so the ball retains energy longer; slow greens remove energy faster.
Gravity also changes both speed and direction. Uphill, it increases energy loss. Downhill, it assists the ball. On side slopes, gravity pulls the ball toward the fall line.
The critical variable connecting speed and break is time. Gravity can influence the ball only while it is moving. A slower putt takes longer to reach the hole, giving gravity more time to act—so it breaks more. A firmer putt travels for less time and therefore requires less break. The same principle explains why fast greens, long putts, and especially downhill putts often require more break.
This is why speed and green reading cannot be separated. Change the speed and you automatically change the required Aim Point.
Elite distance control is therefore not about memorizing stroke lengths. Different green speeds and slopes require different amounts of initial energy. The real skill is predicting how much energy the green will remove and delivering the correct amount at impact.
Elite putters don’t reproduce identical strokes—they reproduce the correct energy for each putt.
Master energy, friction, gravity, and time, and putting becomes less about guesswork and more about informed, repeatable decisions.
