Elite putting is not about hoping the ball goes in—it is about controlling how the ball arrives at the hole.
In the Puttalyze System, this is called Target Speed: the speed of the ball as it reaches the cup, not the speed immediately after impact. Elite putters adapt the energy delivered at impact while keeping the desired finishing speed constant.
The Puttalyze standard is 3 revolutions per second (rps). This creates an optimal balance between three key factors: hole capture, predictable distance control, and reliable green reading.
Why does speed matter? Although the physical cup is 108 mm wide, its effective capture size changes with ball speed. A ball arriving too fast gives gravity less time to pull it into the hole, effectively shrinking the capture window and increasing lip-outs. A ball arriving too slowly becomes more vulnerable to grain, surface imperfections, and friction.
The goal is therefore simple: change the initial energy, not the Target Speed. Uphill or slow putts require more energy; downhill or fast putts require less. But the ball should still arrive at approximately 3 rps.
This consistency is also essential for accurate green reading. Puttalyze Aim Point and Distance Point calculations depend on a consistent finishing speed. Change the Target Speed, and the predicted break changes too.
Common amateur mistakes include hitting firmly to “take out the break” or becoming too tentative downhill. Both destroy speed consistency and make distance and break less predictable.
Puttalyze Principle: Consistency is not repeating the same stroke. It is repeatedly delivering the ball to the hole at the correct Target Speed.
Control the energy. Standardize the finish. Make putting a repeatable scientific process.
